How serious can you take a "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" list when they include a musician? whose inclusion blurb starts, "Look, as far as we know, our asymmetrically coiffed party pal has never held a guitar in his life."

And reading down the list, it seems the title should have been "72 Greatest Unknown Guitar Mauling 6 String Noisemakers You've Never Heard Of"

OK, in re-reading the list I find I have heard of 28. Considering the source(SPIN), I am only surprised at 6...the aforementioned John Fahey, Frank Zappa, Burt Jansch, Ali Farka Toure, Shuggie Otis and Mahavishnu John McLaughlin. now I am not surprised these guitarists would appear on such a list, just surprised that SPIN would recognize their talent

How John Fahey got included in this list (of folks I've never heard of, for the most part) is beyond comprehension. He's one of the few listed who actually belongs there, an amazing, ground-breaking guitarist.

I think I knew and listened to maybe 20%. But a least half of them I've neither heard, heard of, or even know their band's name.
I also checked out their best 125 albums of the last 25 years list. From that entire list I've listened to 14 of them.
I think it's safe to say I'm out of touch with popular culture.
